Why subscriptions creep up on you
Few people sign up for too many subscriptions on purpose. The total grows quietly, one reasonable decision at a time. The usual causes:
- Forgotten free trials. A trial needs a payment method, and if you do not cancel in time it turns into a paid plan automatically.
- Annual renewals. A yearly charge is easy to forget because it only happens once. It often arrives when you have stopped using the service.
- Price increases. Services raise prices, and the notice email is easy to miss. The amount you remember is not always the amount you pay.
- Duplicate services. Two music apps, two cloud storage plans, or a service you pay for that is already included in another bundle.
- Different billing cycles. Weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly charges are hard to compare in your head.
What to record for each subscription
- Service name
- Amount and currency
- Billing cycle: weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly
- Next payment date
- Whether it is a free trial, and when the trial ends
- Category, such as entertainment, software or fitness
- A short note: which email or app store account it is billed to, and how to cancel
To compare services fairly, think in one cycle. A yearly plan divided by twelve tells you its real monthly cost, and a weekly charge multiplied by about four and a third does the same. Seen that way, a small weekly add-on can cost more than the streaming service you were planning to cancel.
The note is the field people skip and later wish they had. Knowing whether a subscription was bought through an app store or a website saves a lot of searching when you want to cancel.
How Hanory works as a subscription tracker
Hanory is a web app for your digital home record, and subscriptions sit next to your products, warranties and bills. You add each subscription manually with its price, currency, billing cycle, next payment date, category and note, and mark it active or inactive.
No bank linking, by design
Hanory does not connect to your bank or card and does not detect subscriptions automatically. That is a deliberate trade-off: entering a subscription takes a minute, and in return you never share bank credentials or transaction history with another service. Your list contains only what you choose to add.
Trial reminders before the trial ends
For a free trial, set the next payment date to the day the first paid charge is due and add a note such as “free trial”. Then choose how many days before a payment you want to be reminded, so you have time to decide whether to keep it. Browser notifications work today, and reminders also arrive as a daily email digest with one-click unsubscribe.
Bills in the same agenda
Subscriptions are only part of what leaves your account each month. In Hanory you can also track household bills such as electricity, water, gas, internet, phone and HOA or condo fees, with amount, due date, paid or unpaid status, recurrence and payment history. The Today agenda shows upcoming bill and subscription payments together, labeled by type and date, alongside warranty expiries and maintenance.
Currencies kept separate
If you pay some services in US dollars and others in euros, Hanory keeps those amounts separate instead of adding them into a single misleading total. Hanory currently supports USD, EUR and TRY.
A 10-minute monthly subscription review
A tracker only helps if you look at it. Put a short review on your calendar near the start of each month:
- Scan the next 30 days. Look at every renewal and bill due before your next review.
- Check trials first. Decide now whether each trial is worth paying for.
- Ask one question per subscription: did I use this in the last month, and would I sign up again at today's price?
- Look for overlaps. Two services that do the same job are a quick win.
- Compare against your statement. If you see a recurring charge that is not on your list, add it or cancel it.
- Update the list. Correct changed prices and next payment dates, and mark cancelled services as inactive.
Pay special attention to yearly renewals coming up in the next two months. They are the largest single charges and the easiest to miss.
How to cancel a subscription
Hanory does not cancel subscriptions for you, but a few general rules make cancelling easier:
- Cancel where you subscribed. Subscriptions bought through Apple's App Store or Google Play are usually managed in that store's subscription settings, not by deleting the app. Subscriptions bought on a website are usually cancelled in your account settings on that website.
- Cancel before the renewal date. Many services keep access until the end of the paid period, so cancelling early rarely costs you anything, but check the service's terms.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the cancellation email or a screenshot until you have seen that no new charge arrives.
- Update your tracker. Mark the subscription as inactive and add a note with the cancellation date.
If you are charged after cancelling, contact the service first with your confirmation. Your bank or card issuer can explain what other options are available.
Plans and pricing
Subscriptions and bills are unlimited on the free plan, which also includes one home, unlimited products, 25 documents or photos, and backup and export as JSON, CSV or PDF. Hanory Plus adds unlimited homes and documents, with a 14-day refund on your first purchase. See Hanory pricing for current details.
Once your recurring payments are in order, the same app can keep track of what you own and when warranties run out. Read the warranty tracker guide to set that up.
